Am I remembering correctly that once upon time we learned that Locke's mother had also been a patient in Hurley's institution? Might young Emily have had a breakdown after John's birth, when her mother forced her to give him up for adoption?

You could be right, but I thought it was Libby that we learned was also in Hurley's mental facility (although they didn't meet at that time).

Yes, his mom was once a patient at Santa Rosa. I can't remember the epi in which we learned about it. Something must have went terribly wrong for her to go from a young teenager seemingly enjoying life, then giving birth to him and not wanting to hold him, and then to a disturbed woman claiming he was immaculately conceived.

The question I have is why did she change her mind? When he was 1st born she (desperately) wanted to hold him, but was told he was too young/small. Then when next she sees him she no longer wants to. I wonder what changed her mind in between those two scenes.

Her mother certainly seemed cold. Back in those days it was very easy to have a family member committed to a hospital. I'm sure the writers would do something much more interesting... but her mom seemed awful. With A Capital B.

Thanks, Sam! Does anyone think the person Locke eventually meets as his mother is NOT "young" Emily, but is actually his grandmother? (We never hear her first name; she is only called "Mrs. Locke.") As for the reason young Emily runs out of the hospital room, saying "I can't do this!", I don't think she means "I can't hold him." I think she means "I can't give him up for adoptions," which I think was what Mrs. Locke was insisting upon. (And I think she was insisting on it because that was the plan, made with Alpert.)

Locke has always been a sucker for redheads.

There was always a chance, that the person that introduced herself as Emily Locke, was hired by Cooper. Also......how special is Locke? Could Cooper have known and it made John's kidney even more important?

Given the direction things are going with Locke, I think we'll eventually learn that the kidney transplant/theft was not as simple as it seemed at first. That is, it was not only a Long Con on Locke by Cooper, it was a Long Con on us!

Well, it certainly was convenient it was gone when Ben shot John. So that the Island could show John he was ,indeed, special.

I don't think Cooper knew anything about him being special, he doesn't seem smart enough to get it. I think John was some guy he conned.
