View Full Version : 6-7 months.... but no Belly?
Sawyers Mojito 05-09-2008, 12:15 AM Emily Had no signs of a Belly when she was getting ready or on teh stratcher but she tells them she is 6-7 months preggo.
(2nd trimester Island stuff Dun dun dun)
So whats this mean? Bad props? or a clue?
gammaquest 05-09-2008, 12:21 AM She did have one of those old fashioned skirts on that does tend to cover up an emerging belly for a while! ...but it's not that uncommon to not have a large belly until late in the sixth month or so. Through both of my pregnancies, I wore my normal clothes until the end of the fifth month.
jennylee27 05-09-2008, 12:23 AM A first time mom wouldn't necessarily show at 6 months, especially if she was wearing useful a-line poofy skirts. It wouldn't be the first teenage pregnancy to have been successfully hidden. I don't think he appearance is an error.
Guinevere 05-09-2008, 12:25 AM I wondered about that but then though of the skirt she was wearing and realized, if she was carrying low, it probably wouldn't show.
Aversion 05-09-2008, 12:27 AM Not everyone 'shows', not even at 6 months. It's perfectly possible she was pregnant and not noticeably.
Selene1212 05-09-2008, 02:04 AM The more important question is could a six month old (24-28 weeks) fetus have survived back then? Realistically?

I too thought of this question for a second, before I remembered that this is Lost's way of explaining Locke's specialness.
lostmio 05-09-2008, 02:08 AM The more important question is could a six month old (24-28 weeks) fetus have survived back then? Realistically? I agree that's the big point.
Factor in
-Emily's later "immaculate conception" remark,
-her mother's "twice your age" complaint (making it unlikely Cooper was the dad)
-and Alpert's strange appearance,
and it all adds up to something very mysterious about Locke's conception.
Exile236 05-09-2008, 02:09 AM And technically she said, "5 months... almost 6 months".

Because he "had work to do." The Island's mojo is strong, my friend!

Well, the nurse said he was a miracle and that no baby born that early had ever survived in that hospital before.
As for the "no show" pregnancy, that was also in the days of heavy girdles. Heavy girdle, pouffy skirt, first pregnancy and was trying to hide it...I can believe it.
I never understood how someone could hide a full term pregnancy until my best friend's little sister did it right under our eyes!
100%
I agree that's the big point.

I don't think it would be hard to believe that Cooper was twice Emily's age. If she was 16, he would have been 32. And her mother was probably exaggerating some. When I was
16, my mother would have considered a 28 year old man "twice my age"! As well as dead meat!
lostfan9 05-09-2008, 02:22 AM I work with a 20 year old who didn't even recognize early symptoms of pregnancy before she realized she was late. She had the exact same ones my mother said she had when expecting her first born (fainting, dizziness, fatigue, weepiness). In fact, she didn't learn she was pregnant until she collpased at her boyfriend's and was admitted to a hospital for tests. They thought it was really serious. LOL. The 20 year old is due in early July and just started showing late last month. She could still hide it if she wanted to.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's an "ick" factor in there somewhere. ;)
So, Locke survives his pregnant mother being hit by a car, survives being born extremely premature, survives being thrown out a 10th floor window, survives a plane crash, and survives being shot by Ben. It would seem the island has been protecting him for quite some time.

This is true, but I'm not sure if ANY baby survived that early back then. Even today it's extremely rare for a baby younger than 31 weeks to survive. Locke's birth was definately amazing!
jane_eire 05-09-2008, 11:04 AM Why did Locke wish he was never born?

I work in a neonatal unit, and most babies born after 30 weeks survive and do quite well. After 24 weeks they still have a good chance of surviving, though many of them have long-term issues. We've even had a couple of babies born at the 21 week mark make it. In our until, we don't really stress too much over a 31 week baby unless there is some other underlying chromosomal or physical issue.
26 weekers did survive back then, one of our nurses is one. But was very very rare.
