I thought the Captain was a total bad ***, but it's too bad the way things turned out. He was cool, but Keamy is an absolute beast of a man, a real evil son of a bitch, and i wouldn't blame him for standing down against him, even if he was his superior.

When she had to bail out and got hurt (and eventually killed) Widmore's original plans went out the window. Captain Gault obviously had no real clue as to what they were doing in the first place.

It seems similar to a naval arrangement, where the marines aboard the ship have a somewhat independent command structure from the sailors. (Necessarily, since if they go off to fight, they're going to need to take their command structure with them, and the ship will need to keep its own command structure.) So the captain was supposedly in charge of the ship, and Keamy was in charge of his men and their mission. And since they each had a key to the safe, they were apparently jointly in charge of the overall mission.

The deal with the keys reminded me of Hunt for Red October, where the captain and the "political officer" each had one of the keys for arming the nuclear missiles, and the captain killed him and took his key. In that case, the ship's doctor said something very similar about the point of having two keys.

I disagree; I think he was like this from the start. There was a certain calculating coldness about him from the moment Sayid and Des landed on the freighter.

Awww. I'm glad I found this thread; was starting to think I was the only one in mourning. And I've been thinking of him as Captain Hottie for the last week, so LOL at the thread title.

Three episodes just wasn't enough. I'll greatly miss his ruggedly attractive presence and charming Australian accent. For the first ten minutes or so of the episode where we meet Goodwin, I thought it was Richard Roxburgh (because he is a genius with accents) but then I realized it wasn't. But it's funny, because even though Captain Gault looks a bit like Richard Roxburgh, and so does the guy who played Goodwin, they don't look anything alike.
