View Full Version : Ben and Hurley share a chocolate bar...
Kate731 05-09-2008, 12:43 AM ...Awwwww
Well, cuteness may not be the exact response I'm looking for, but you know what I mean.
I actually found this scene really comical though, and I'm not the type that laughs out loud easily at a tv show. But I was definitely cracking up at this scene.
tiewashere 05-09-2008, 12:45 AM I thought it was sorta lame. Ya know, he shot some people and was against you guys for a while...so give him a candy bar.
I thought it was just there to TRY and make us laugh.
GettinLost 05-09-2008, 12:45 AM You know - I was thinking right before Hurley offered him half of the candy - it would be so funny if Ben said, "You know those things are poisonous - they'll make you crazy!" LOL!!
But yeah, it was a cute moment to lighten up the mood.
beema 05-09-2008, 12:46 AM thought that was a pretty comical scene as well, and I'm sure that's why they had it in there.
Kate731 05-09-2008, 12:48 AM thought it was just there to TRY and make us laugh.
Well, it worked on me.
And yeah, I'm sure that was the entire point of the scene, a brief comical moment to lighten the mood. I enjoyed it. This show is so freaking serious all the time, after all.
lostgurl 05-09-2008, 12:50 AM I don't know, I was cracking up during that scene. They reminded me of a couple kids.
Guinevere 05-09-2008, 12:51 AM I thought it was just another scene that showed us who Hurley really is at heart - a really nice man. I noticed that Ben was surprised to be offered part of the bar. I don't think Hurley likes Ben but, once again, he's doing what he can to ease a situation in the only way he knows how - sharing.
ZoeWashburne 05-09-2008, 12:52 AM Yeah, I thought it was cute too. Well, as cute as a scene involving Ben can be... ;)
But I thought it also sort of underlined the fact that Hurley and Ben were more or less on the same side of things now - both are getting off the island, as we know. Unlike Locke, it is their time to leave. So it was just showing a bit of connection between them, I thought.
Aversion 05-09-2008, 12:53 AM I loved it, great scene and really well done.
When you think about Ben and everything he's done, to come down to this moment, with hurley. You could almost hear him sigh. Great stuff.
GettinLost 05-09-2008, 12:54 AM Hurley is just a nice humane being.
Alison59 05-09-2008, 12:56 AM I thought it was really sweet. Not to be mean, but food is important to Hurley's character and he shared it with someone he probably is completely disgusted by. Hurley's a great guy!
LostLaura 05-09-2008, 12:56 AM I was worried about Hurley staying out there with Ben but that scene lightened it all up for me. I actually LOLed. It really speaks to Hurley's nature: giving and willing to be light in the face of something serious. Just being who he is in order to get by. Classic Hurley.
erin1679 05-09-2008, 12:56 AM I loved the scene. Hurley and Ben are two totally different types of people, and to see them sitting there sharing a candy bar like kids sure lightened up the mood a bit. It brought a smile to my face :)
mezzosoprano82 05-09-2008, 12:56 AM I actually thought it was really touching...my eyes welled up for a second. I mean, they're all alone, they don't know what's going on, they just survived an attack on their camp where Hurley's friends and Ben's DAUGHTER were killed in cold blood. Hurley chose to put their differences behind him and reach out to Ben. And BEN chose to put their differences behind him and accept it. It was a beautiful moment to me, and acted perfectly by Jorge and Michael, without even a word of dialogue. But I'm a total wuss about things like that. :-)
kbnha5 05-09-2008, 12:57 AM I thought it was cute :) Tee hee!
Cardielost 05-09-2008, 12:57 AM Yes, I thought it was meant to be touching, not comical. Hurley is really all heart. And Ben is still devastated by Alex's death--he looks shell-shocked. ME knows how you play grief even if given few lines that say, "I'm grieving!"
Cardie
Aversion 05-09-2008, 12:58 AM I think I'm the only one who actually thought it was really touching..
Quite a few people who posted already found it touching, it was definitely a beautiful moment.
foghillcafe 05-09-2008, 01:02 AM There was way black humor there, as they were hanging over a put of hundreds of dead dharma people eating their candy bar...
Shoeless Rye 05-09-2008, 01:03 AM I think they should make that scene into a print/poster.
Steph_Bacon 05-09-2008, 01:06 AM I thought it was adorable! And the fact that it followed the creepy Claire scene was a really neat contrast...
Rosemary Bats 05-09-2008, 01:07 AM I agree with many posters: it just goes to show that no matter what happens, Hurley is the most genuinely nice guy on Craphole Island.
lockesmithe 05-09-2008, 01:10 AM Great, twisted comic relief. Bravo!
Aversion 05-09-2008, 01:11 AM I agree with many posters: it just goes to show that no matter what happens, Hurley is the most genuinely nice guy on Craphole Island.
True but <huskywhisper>he's also craaazzzzyyyyy</huskywhisper>.
green_eyed_colleen 05-09-2008, 01:14 AM Poor Hurley always shares (even if its Ben). That's just Hurley's nature.
That snot Ben didn't even thank him. Ungrateful toad!
Rosemary Bats 05-09-2008, 01:15 AM True but <huskywhisper>he's also craaazzzzyyyyy</huskywhisper>.
Psshhh. *dismissive gesture* Crazy I can deal with. I've got a few friends with issues, including one with actual schizophrenia. I'd still rather have "crazy"-but-a-genuine-sweetheart Hurley as my friend over anyone else on that island.
woland 05-09-2008, 01:15 AM I thought the scene was oddly touching, Ben's clearly still hurting and Hurley was doing what he could to help him.
Exile236 05-09-2008, 01:20 AM It just goes to show that even in the weirdest situations that Hurley will always be a good man at heart.
God's tom 05-09-2008, 02:04 AM When I was watching that scene, I was trying to put myself in Ben's head...He was probably thinking: "Wow - an Apollo bar...haven't had one of these babies in awhile!"
Guinevere 05-09-2008, 02:09 AM When I was watching that scene, I was trying to put myself in Ben's head...He was probably thinking: "Wow - an Apollo bar...haven't had one of these babies in awhile!"
:rotflmao2:, Tom!!
Rheems 05-09-2008, 02:13 AM This Ben-Hurley dynamic is comedic gold. The chocolate bar scene was brilliant (for a lot of reasons), but I'm actually partial to the point in the mass-grave scene where we, right in the middle of Ben's intensely nebulous and morbid ramblings, pull back for a wide camera shot of the three. There's Locke in the bottom corner of the frame, sifting through corpses...there's Ben sitting on a ledge, waxing fatalistic about dreams and zombies and mass-murdering blah blah blah....
And then there's Hurley. Just standing there. Taking it all in.
I lol'd so hard.
Lostfana 05-09-2008, 02:21 AM This may sound silly but that scene kind of reminded me of the time when Ben came to the island and Annie handed him an Apollo bar. Now that he's out...in a way, he is being handed an Apollo bar by Hurley.
Michelle Friday 05-09-2008, 02:26 AM True but <huskywhisper>he's also craaazzzzyyyyy</huskywhisper>.
I love Hurley... and his crazy makes me think of these lyrics from the Gnarls Barkley
Crazy song:
I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that phase.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space
And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much
Does that make me crazy? possibly.
xanderthemighty 05-09-2008, 05:40 AM I really liked this scene... it was kinda touching in a funny way you know. It really shows Hurley's character and Ben's too I think. If you watch Ben, it looks like he wants some but wont ask for it but Hurley picks up on it and breaks the bar in half. I think it's kinda one of the themes of the show... showing compassion for others... in such an uncomplicated way.
sttct 05-09-2008, 05:51 AM I think it's touching too because Ben has never really had any friends except for the little girl we saw i the flashback. Everyone else he has to use and manipulate. Even when he want's to be friends or more than friends with say "Juliet" he's so unsociable that he gets cast away. He's an *** in the show, but I do feel badly that all his life he really hasn't had a good relationship with anyone (that we've seen). Not even with his stolen daughter, that was probably his only "friend" that was just killed and killed because of her association with him.

Yes, eXactly, I loved it. Loved it. Hell, I loved it.
Like someone pointed out, though, I don't think it was there merely for comical relief-
I am sure it was supposed to show us that they are officially on the same side now. That'll probably remain the case in the future too.
100%

This too... Honestly, I don't even understand how come that some people still have no sympathy for liking ( I love Ben so much I'm writing a thesis on his character) this man who sacrificed his whole life for the Island... Everyone he knew he HAD to manipulate and use to protect the many... I'm surprised he's sane at all.
RodimusBen 05-09-2008, 07:44 AM Yeah, anyone who doesn't at least sympathize to some degree with Ben at this point has a pretty hard heart.
Whenever a scene like the candy bar thing happens, I always like to think back on everything these characters have been through, and how many times they've been on opposing sides. Last year, when Sawyer and Sayid confronted Juliet together, I was thinking, "two months ago these guys were torturing each other!"
lipgloss_and_revolver 05-09-2008, 07:56 AM I liked that scene. I love Ben. It was a nice little scene that was put there to show us something, of which I'll get back to you 'coz my head is still spinning -- am I crazy? Okay bye.
:heartben:
stefanie_bean 05-09-2008, 10:57 AM I thought it was just another scene that showed us who Hurley really is at heart - a really nice man. I noticed that Ben was surprised to be offered part of the bar. I don't think Hurley likes Ben but, once again, he's doing what he can to ease a situation in the only way he knows how - sharing.
Thank you. I don't believe it was intended to be cute or comical. Hurley is the one who can find/see the cabin. This is part of how I have seen Hurley all along, as "the fool" whom everyone thinks is just a doofus, but who actually has some deep abilities. Part of his abilities arise, IMO, from his "innocence" - and his fundamental goodness/purity of heart.
It's like in CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia - Hurley is in a way a kind of "Lucy" character. Lucy is the youngest; her brothers and sisters are always lording it over her. (As a fat character, Hurley is automatically assumed to be harmless and comical.)
But Lucy is the first to go into Narnia. Later, she is the first to see Aslan; even when he's right in front of the others, they're still missing him by a mile. Lucy is simple, kind, generous, tender-hearted - and all of these qualities make her especially "beloved."
Just as the Island "moves," so does Jacob's cabin. And Hurley can see it, just as Lucy could see Aslan.
Another point about the candy-sharing scene. Someone in another thread mentioned that back in Season 1, when Rousseau was still seen as a crazed maniacal woman (rather than an eventual ally), when Sayid was half-afraid of her and still very angry about his treatment, Hurley embraces her.
So perhaps this gesture of Hurley's means a lot more about the eventual development of the Ben story arc, how Ben will wind up being seen by everyone else.
Lobby 05-09-2008, 03:49 PM Loved the scene. And the one with Hurley over the grave. It was the first time we heard what happened during the Purge. Everyone assumed it was Ben who did it. Ben killed his father (just like Locke manipulated Sawyer into killing his) but that was it. I loved the hurt in Ben's voice when he told Hurley he didn't cause the Purge-the Native's leaders did. That he wasn't always the leader. Which makes me wonder who was the leader. But all that was shared with Hurley. Then they shared the candy bar.
Hurley handing it to him reminded me of Annie sharing the candy bar with Ben as a child too. Both times it was one of the rare gestures of real sharing Ben had experienced without someone expecting something in return. Just a simple candy bar. Perhaps the start of a friendship.
branders0n 05-09-2008, 03:53 PM Yeah, I thought it was cute too.
I agree with this. I think it was to show Ben's move from Chosen One to common folk.
Chrysander 05-09-2008, 03:53 PM I was actually waiting for Hurley to attack Ben with his machete, I thought this was the end for Ben. I was surprised to see candy bar sharing. Hurley can't forgive his own dad for walking out on him, but he can forgive Ben for taking part in mass murder and screwing with Michael and the other losties, leading to his girlfriend also dying. I wouldn't give Ben anything, I'd have cut his arms off
archangel1772 05-09-2008, 04:05 PM I guess I'm the only one who thought the scene was pointless. Sure it was well acted, and touching, and cute, and comical, but was it necessary? It just seemed like useless filler to me. I would hope that, with so few episodes left in the series, and with the writer's strike shortening this season, every scene would have some importance in the overall story.
I think Hurley's selflessness has been well established by now, and this scene didn't really show a different side to Ben (at least not to me), so I don't feel it had anything to do with character development. Unless they show some important consequence of this scene in a future episode, I'm gonna call it like I see it: unnecessary fluff.
saintmaggie 05-09-2008, 04:06 PM My favorite part was simply the look on Ben's face when Hurley was unwrapping that thing. He looked at it like he was so hungry he would happily lick the wrapper after Hurley was done.
If this was a cartoon it would have taken the shape of a ham there would be drool coming out of Ben's mouth.
Heroic Poser 05-09-2008, 05:05 PM I thought the shot was outstanding.
Here's this guy we all feared. I mean, remember eating the cereal with that weird grin? So here's this guy we all feared eating a candy bar with Hurley, just waiting for Locke to come out and tell how he's gonna save the world.
simone5p 05-09-2008, 05:11 PM ... as they were hanging over a put of hundreds of dead dharma people eating their candy bar...
Yes! That was the irony for me... also the fact that the Apollo bars are suspicious in the first place... and they have to remind Ben of Annie since she's the one who told him he could have all he wanted.

No, you're not alone. Sure, it was comical, but while I was watching this scene I was literally shouting at the TV "Go back in the cabin! We don't need to see this! What else is Christian saying!?" I kinda think tptb just threw that in to torment us...those evil geniuses ;)
I think that was just the point. We'll be told in due time what went on in the cabin.. Remember the "rules" of Lost.. For every question answered, another 100 will be asked...
I also thought it was a moving scene. That look on Ben's face, so hungry but too proud to ask, and then Hurley who doesn't even think twice and just shares what he's got... So sweet. It was a bonding scene, and I don't agree that it wasn't important. Also the way they both got up very similarly afterwards was telling as to now those two are doing Locke's bidding for once... Interesting move.. All the way earlier in the epi it was Ben and Locke who was sharing the secret of the cabin and Hurley was left out, but now both Ben and Hurley were left out.
K.. I'm rambling... sorry..
shootingstar 05-09-2008, 06:02 PM What can I say I liked the scene. From the look on Ben's face when Hurley is opening up the candy bar to Hurley sharing it. I thought the scene was both funny and sweet, mixed in with a little compassion.
just jack 05-09-2008, 06:24 PM Why do I have the nagging suspicion that we're only a few posts away from starting a ship called Burley?

Nah, it definitely wasn't unimportant, but as for Ben and Hurley, I think that our mastermind was simply mirroring Hurley's nonverbal behavior to get himself off Locke's case... But, then again, we don't want me rambling about psychology either
Nambar_Ek 05-09-2008, 11:06 PM I have a feeling Ben has ulterior motives. He is trying to ingratiate himself with Hurley. Remeber the episode when Hurley gets Sawyer to do all sorts of nice things for everyone becuase he's decided with Jack gone, the losties need another leader. Hurley has a lot of power. I think Ben recognizes that. I think Ben still looks down on Locke as evidenced by an earlier conversation they had when Ben congratulated Locke on making Hurley think he decided to go with them to the cabin on his own. Locke replied to Ben "I'm not you" and after a slight pause Ben says "No you're not." Hurley will conveniently report back that Ben is no longer in power, that Locke is the one now in charge. Anything that goes awry will be Locke's fault even though Ben is still pulling the strings and manipulating Locke into doing exactly what he wants him to do.
girlgoescrazy 05-09-2008, 11:58 PM "you're certainly not", to be precise :D
Yes, I believe so too, but once and for all we all need to learn to stop saying all those things about Ben as if he was doing it because he liked it, or to use manipulator in a bad way... he has to do what he has to do, and that's the way it's gonna be for him... He already saw how the future was supposed to be, it's hard for me to believe that he is worried for himself in that sense... We'll see how it plays out anyways...
Andok 05-10-2008, 12:34 AM This was actually my favorite moment of the show. To me atleast it encapsulated the irony of Ben and Hurley two quite polar opposites sort of just out of the loop at that very moment. I found it very funny and poignant.
Confidence-Man 05-10-2008, 02:05 AM Great moment and what I saw was how appreciative Ben was even though he did not say anything. You know he probably really has never had a true friend since Annie, and Hurley innocence is probably quite refreshing to him.

Haha! I was thinking more of a Three Stooges style ship:
Burlen: Tearing down the Wall
Hocken: (a Loogie)
lostoholic 05-10-2008, 02:42 AM I Love that scene! Very funny! Hurley is a nice guy. What's weird is that Ben actually took the candy bar - like he's humbling himself.

He did look quite humble and I think it is because no one has been that genuine to him in a long time, probably since Annie.
Tio BOB 05-10-2008, 03:03 AM Hurley owns the most human scenes in the entire show show.
Sharing a chocolate bar with the ultimate badass, one of the most evil guys ever seen on a TV show just because he's probably hungry shows how big is Hurley's heart.

Too true.. Ben is the only character where I feel that there are no coincidences.... Everything's so fixed, which only makes him more fascinating to me...
Confidence-Man 05-10-2008, 10:22 PM Hurley owns the most human scenes in the entire show show.

I have a feeling Ben will remember this gesture and help Hurley down the road.
girlgoescrazy 05-10-2008, 11:57 PM Absolutely, everything Ben ever wanted in life is someone to take care of him, and it took taking his own life (selfish Island that demanded every sacrifice on his part) to put him together with these great people (like HUrley) and maybe realize that friendship is at sight...
Peledonu 05-11-2008, 01:24 AM I think the scene was actually a very significant moment. Locke's absence was just as important.
Hurley represents friendship, compassion and what makes people human. The scene shows that now that Ben has passed the torch of "communing" with Jacob he's able to begin reconnecting with the human race. While Locke's absence means that his connection is being broken. The burden of being an agent of Jacob seems to be dehumanizing.
Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
girlgoescrazy 05-11-2008, 02:02 AM NO, I absolutely agree! Further explanations you can find in all my other posts :D
stefanie_bean 05-11-2008, 12:47 PM Another point about the candy-sharing scene. Not only does it (IMO) point to Ben's possible redemption; it also reinforces for me that the Island has healed Hurley. Before, Hurley would have eaten the candy bar himself, secretly. Now, he shares. It illustrates not only his compassion, but that on the Island he is whole; not subject to his compulsions.
LostLaura 05-11-2008, 01:00 PM I have a feeling Ben will remember this gesture and help Hurley down the road.
Is that how Hurley manages to get back to the beach quickly and become one of the O6?
Lost face 05-11-2008, 01:40 PM I guess I'm the only one who thought the scene was pointless. Sure it was well acted, and touching, and cute, and comical, but was it necessary? It is quite possible fluff. But it was fluff that made me lol.
Although it may be setting up a situation in the future. i.e ......
Ben, Hurley, and John roll up on the other losties. And Sawyer pushes ben and says "what are you looking at (insert nickname). And then Hurley says, " Lay off him man".
Not saying thats gonna happen,,,, just saying
LovesLaboursLost 05-11-2008, 01:44 PM I loved the scene. Hurley and Ben are two totally different types of people, and to see them sitting there sharing a candy bar like kids sure lightened up the mood a bit. It brought a smile to my face :)
I also thought that Ben looked shocked, and even a little ashamed, that Hurley could be so kind and forgiving at a time like that. Two great actors making one great scene.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW, is that really a picture of you, Erin? If so, you are distinctly hot.
toddintexas 05-11-2008, 01:54 PM Is that how Hurley manages to get back to the beach quickly and become one of the O6?
That what was in the back of my mind too! If Ben does have a hand in determining the O6 (not saying that he does, but IF he does) this could be why Hurley is a member of the O6. Ben already has a relationship with Jack and knows he wants to get off, Ben had a "breakfast" with Kate, and knows that Jack loves her, Sun is pregnant, and Sayid and Ben did have that little discussion back in the Barracks that we don't know exactly what was said. So if Ben does have a hand in selecting the O6, this sharing scene could be important.
lostlocke 05-11-2008, 02:17 PM I thought this scene was so adorable!! I was smiling when Hurley handed Ben that chocolate, awww, they're friends now. Until Ben does something pyschotic again!!
