View Full Version : The O6 were not supposed to be on the island
benster 05-09-2008, 01:13 AM Since it seems that Flight 815 was pretty much hi-jacked to bring Locke (and maybe some others) to the island, it got me thinking about the O6. The ones that make it back should never have been on the plane in the first place:
Jack -- Christian's coffin was not supposed to be on it and Jack has to fight to get it on. Would he have stayed behind if he didn't succeed?
Kate -- brought in shackles by a Marshall, not an original passenger. If she had left Mullens behind instead of saving him, would she have been caught?
Sun -- was supposed to leave Jin at the airport.
Hurley -- raced to catch the plane. Many obstacles in his way -- should not have made it on.
Sayid -- Was supposed to be on a flight earlier, but insisted on staying in Australia one more day.
Aaron -- Should not be raised by another. Should not have gotten on that plane.
I don't necessarily believe I am right about this, but I found it to be interesting speculation.
Bella 05-09-2008, 01:18 AM Nah.
For one thing, Jack's sister, nephew and father are key players in the mystery. If he hadn't been on the island to lead, things would've been even worse than they are; Hurley's the one who recognized and had a direct connection with the numbers, and can see the cabin; etc.
bearsgonefishin 05-09-2008, 01:20 AM You could also argue that fate made sure they were on the plane. they all either shouldnt have been on the plane or should have missed their flight, yet they didnt.

I look at that list and I come to the opposite conclusion. :) Those people were so close to not being on the plane, and yet they all were on it. Destiny/fate made sure that they were on board, despite all the obstacles in the way.
And I think, knowing what we do about the future, the O6 were not supposed to leave the island. I'm thinking everyone on the plane was supposed to be there and be on the island, and by leaving, the O6 were wrong - hence their future problems.

Good point. Like Mr. Brady told Bobby, luck is all about how you look at it. It's bad luck to break a sandal in a suitcase, but it's good luck his foot wasn't in it.
However, I think there's still something interesting that these were the only characters with issues about getting on the flight.
(Oh -- and Sayid was detained by security...)

I'll second that. They definitely were supposed to be on the flight, but not leave the island.

Shouldn't Locke have been planning to take a later flight, since he was supposed to be on his Walkabout?
And wasn't one of the background characters not supposed to be on the flight? Joanna, wasn't it? She was scuba diving or something and decided to stay a few extra days (or maybe it was leave a few days earlier) and wasn't originally going to be on 815. Correct me if I'm wrong, please! :)
I just think these issues show how much the people on the plane were destined to be on the plane, and therefore on the island.

I tend to agree with you although I think the writers are going to leave this a big question mark in the end.

Yup -- she got an ear infection and couldn't go diving, so I believe she stayed behind for a few days to heal, with the intention of joining her friends later.

It could be argued that many of the passengers should not have been on that particular flight. Check out the following link to see a list of passengers, and why they shouldn't have been onboard (from Lostpedia): http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Oceanic_Flight_815#.22Not_meant_to_be.22
awolben 05-09-2008, 01:51 AM Remember the movie Unbreakable? Samuel L. Jackson kept creating mass scenes of destruction to see if there was anyone that would survive miraculously. I think it may be like that - they wanted Locke on the Island - almost since birth - and whomever else was along for his ride so be it. Yes, Jack happened to be a back surgeon and Yes, there happened to be a pregnant girl for Juliet to experiment on for fertility but the real McCoy was Locke. Unless both sides (Widmore and Linus) were both using the same plane to carry out their plans.

Good list, but most of those are more speculative "if only". I guess I was seeing the more concrete -- maybe more immediate -- decisions that would lead to course correction. i.e. Sun's last minute decision not to leave Jin, Hurley's race to the gate.
And I know we'll find out in the coming weeks what happens, but I guess I was searching for a more metaphysical reason as to why these six.

Yeah i think that's interesting! Except maybe for Aaron and Jack... i think claire was really supposed to be on that plane and jack's problem was only with the coffin so to me he was supposed to take the plane.
