It was Don McLean's "Every Day (http://www.metrolyrics.com/everyday-lyrics-don-mclean.html)", which came out in 1973 - oddly, way past the time frame of the scene, and way past the time of 45 rpm vinyls.

I loved it anyway. Brought back good memories.

Nope- Buddy Holly- Don covered it. Pretty sure that was Buddy's recording.

Nope. It was McLean's.
Maybe they couldn't get rights to Holly's recording...

edit: I just replayed and re-listened on my tv's music (rather than speech) setting. It's hard to tell for sure, The close-caption says it's McClean's version, but that's not uber-reliable.

in the episode, the song is sung by Buddy Holly. it's totally in sync with the timeline. he was killed in a plane crash in the late 1950s...

someone must have re-recorded the song if you've been hearing it all like that lately on tv/radio. hope that helps with the confusion.

Yeah - definately Buddy Holly singing in the episode. I'm a huge Holly fan and when McLean popped up in the CC's I was like - somebody goofed! That's Holly! I've listened to that song tons - and I know Holly's voice when I hear it.

Don McLean did the song "American Pie" (TheDay the Music Died). The song is about the day Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper (Chantily Lace) and Ritchie Valens (La Bamba and Donna) died in a plane crash. It took 3 of the big-named 50's rock artists in one flight.

The interesting words of the lyrics for LOST viewers could be,

"Everyday, it's a getting closer"
"Going faster than a rollar coaster..."

Notice how time is just-a-flyin' by the last few...days?

knew it was Holly right away

The whole plane crash thing ties rather neatly
