yes, you figured it would be my thread, but these questions are even more important now that we know that there are real "chosen" ones, and the will of the Island:

1. How did Benjamin get chosen???
2. What has happened for him to become unfavorable for the Island?
3. who is the one who purged Dharma, if it wasn't Ben's idea?
4. What is the relationship between Ben and Locke?
5. Oh, and HOW THE HELL DID WIDMORE KNOW WHERE BEN WAS GOING???

Please, submit your thoughts, I am really lost at this point

As for how Ben got chosen:
Ben was born near Portland, where Mittelos is presumably headquartered.... Aaaaand.... That's all I got on that.

As for who masterminded the purge:
We saw in "One of Them" that Ben was following Richard's plan. As for whether or not the purge was Richard's idea... don't know.

Let's not forget Horace Goodspeed presided over Ben's birth, as well as his inception to the island.

1. i believe richard did just stumble upon ben on the island, and could tell he was special from what he said about his mother. it's possible that he was purposely brought to the island as a kid by someone, but i don't think so.

2. one of the things would be the whole fertility thing. richard, who seems to know a lot about the island, says that it's a distraction or a waste of time or something. add to that the general acting like a prick that he's been doing since we met him.

3. it was richards idea, or the head of the natives at the time.

4.i'm not really sure what you're asking, but generally i think ben has been guiding locke to become the next "chosen one" which he has now completed and passed on the mantle.

5. i think widmore was the one who helped set up the dharma initiative, so would know about the emergency protocol to protect the island (ie. move the island). he also seems to know ben very well ("i know what you are" etc.) so it makes sense he would know what ben's next step would be.

I thought it was pretty clear in the episode that the Purge was the idea of the previous leader of the Others...whoever Ben replaced as leader.

I think Richard has continually been the 2nd in command, and chooses to exert his influence from the background, so there is someone else we haven't (???) met who was the prior leader.

For example, perhaps Widmore was the previous leader of the Others. Ben supplants him after the Purge, leading to claims of Ben "stealing" the island from Widmore. That would ironically put Ben and Widmore in similar positions by 10/2005: former caretakers of the island who have been banished and replaced. And it would make their fight a petty two-sided bid for revenge rather than a global war for control of the island.

i've said before that widmore might have been a native, and i think it's pretty likely. it would explain how him and ben know each other so well - widmore "groomed" ben to be the next leader, in the same way ben is to locke. also, its a small thing, but widmore talks about the nightmares he's been having, which could be related to locke's dreams, or the ones that ben says he used to have.

I always thought it was Richard, and after this episode i'm more convinced than ever.
