Was that just a little humor or "double meaning"?

addictedfan.... I even wrote that line down to make sure I would not forget it.... I sooo wanted to make sure it was a topic for discussion.... thanks so much...

There are so many double meanings to this one little line..... OMG there is just so much information!!

Agreed that was a great line, I think it was quite deliberate and really profound... at the very least extremely thought provoking!

Best line in the episode in my opinion...I also thought of the Virgin Mary statues Charlie had stashed when I saw it...

I think it had a double meaning, but not one necessarily related to the show. More of a political message I think... like religion isn't a weapon, considering the state of affairs in the world today. But I could be missing something.

Me too!! What was the funny line she had last season in Hurley's FB where his father(Cheech) returns? Something about even mothers having "needs"! LOL
And I think she covered the Jesus statue's ears!

Yeah...you're probably right! Even on the Island there seems to be an ongoing battle based on what the opposing sides feel is justified .... " the greater good" vs personal gain.

I was just thinking with all the Biblical refs in Lost and trying to think if it could connect to something more specific....like maybe Aaron who is going to be a "savior"( at least, imo) being used as a "weapon" in the battle for control of the Island?

I agree with this too, I think it is more likely metaphorical for "religion isn't a weapon" as opposed to being understood as a literal statement of someone's beliefs or to address a specific matter. Like a lot of the scenes and dialog throughout the course of the series; so much of the subject matter introduced is thought provoking rather than laced with a personal agenda. "Lost"makes the viewer work for answers on many different levels which is one of the things I enjoy most about the show. It is vague yet defined enough to inspire contemplation, encourage intellectual discussion, and/or provoke laughter on a variety of subjects with nothing more than a single sentence, image, or such as the line, "Jesus Christ is not a weapon."

Carmen's lines always make me LOL so hard. Remember: "Jesus called, he wants to know what kind of color car you want..." back in season two?

Wonder what she'd think of Eko's Jesus Stick.

Would that make her reconsider? :lol2:

Total double meaning. She is talking about Mr. Eko's Jesus stick, though she doesn't know it. He's the only one who literally has used Jesus as a weapon. And look what happened to him-stomped like a narc at a biker rally by Smokey, fersure...I guess Smokey branded Mr. Eko a heretic and took him out old school inquisition style--he got medievel on his a55...WOW, that would be awesome if my pick came in on the "Who will kill Keamy" thread. I went with: Dr. Marvin Candle (aka et.al.)--With Mr. Eko's Jesus stick--In the Orchid (<>..<>)

Carmen is great. Boy she protects that little Jesus from causing harm, and from hearing about her sex life too.

The statue (http://gallery.lost-media.com/albums/ep-caps/season4/4x12/normal_4x13-cap-697.jpg)in the church where Christian's funeral was held (in the background during the conversation with Claire's mum) looked just like Carmen's statuette (http://gallery.lost-media.com/albums/ep-caps/season4/4x12/normal_4x13-cap-510.jpg), and it was gold too.

I saw that one coming from a mile away, once he picked up the golden Jesus that he had given his mom before the crash. (In a previous ep, she also acted like that was actually Jesus, covering its ears when she talked about sex, and such.)

It also reminded me right away of Charlie's lines to Eko on different occasions, "what, are you going to hit me with your Jesus stick?" and "I find it quite odd, that your scripture stick is covered in dried blood."

Remember: "Jesus called, he wants to know what kind of color car you want..." back in season two?
That was one of the true classic lines. The setup is what made it work. I just had to find a transcript of it...

CARMEN: Falling down is not exercise. The only time you move is to lift a drumstick from the bucket. Everyday it's the same thing, Hugo -- you work, you eat chicken. You have to change your life, Hugo. You think someone else will change it for you? Maybe if you pray everyday Jesus Christ will come down from heaven, take 200 pounds and bring you a decent woman, and a new car! Yes, Jesus can bring you a new car!

HURLEY: Maybe I don't want to change. Maybe I like my life.

[The phone rings.]

CARMEN: Oh, that must be Jesus!

[She goes to another room and answers the phone, and starts speaking in Spanish, and we think Hurley is done with her and can go back to watching TV...]

[Calling to Hurley] Yes, it is Jesus! He wants to know what color car you want!

Part of what makes it so funny is you have to wonder what the person on the other end of the phone is thinking...

Brilliant line, brilliant character. Often the comic relief in Lost falls flat but Lillian Hurst pulls it off very well. For some reason I always think Carmen and Sawyer would get along, shame we'll probably never see them together.

I don't know...if Sawyer ever gets home then maybe he can live with the Reyes. Afterall, he and Hugo are great buds now!

 Over think? Or maybe it was just meant to be funny. ;) Doc Jensen over at EW made a lot out of it as well, and the gold plated Jesus as a 'symbol' of the Reyes' shallow materialism, a Marxist denunciation of religion...blah blah blah....

I think Cuse and Linderof just love to poke fun at the "over-thinkers". Notice they used "New Otherton" in the script for the 1st time. They coined it in an interview.

Didn't you notice how many 'burning questions' that have been debated here lately were answered with simple, non 'time travel' 'double kate's' 'portals thru space" explanations?

Like; here is the stack of C-4 that will blow up the boat if Keamy's arm thing goes off.....
We should make a list...and see how many people here will refuse to believe what they were shown..

Fact is those kind of Jesus statues are very real and common. You'd be insulting many Latino Roman Catholics to make a lot out of it. And her Jesus line sounds familiar, i think it comes from some other movie.

Am I the only one who was reminded of Charlie and his Virgin Mary statues when he picked it up?
Absolutely I did too. Likely they were meant to be referenced.

Also in that scene:
Whispers for sure.. I bet the 'translations' will bear it out. first sign that Charlie and the Ghosties have followed the O6 home. the numbers in his car are clue #2 that they are there...and Hurley is starting to go crazy.

I'm not making fun of the statue just saying that the line is funny and could have more than one meaning....

And if you read my original post and subsequent posts, you will see I think it's very likely just for humor. But I feely admit, I love to "overthink" as you say...it's part of why I love Lost. I'm not refusing to see the obvious but as a previous poster said...the writers often through out lines that could have layers of meanings...no right or wrong answer which I think is the case with the statue of Jesus Christ. But like I said earlier....Mama Reyes has some very funny lines!

We should make a list...and see how many people here will refuse to believe what they were shown..That list would only be exceeded by the number of excellent theories thought up by Lost viewers who refuse to believe what they were shown.. ;)

Is there a similar line in the movie "Saved"?

UnderAlienControl
05-18-2008, 04:35 AM
I think it's real simple...it's easily a double meaning to us automatically because we all know about Mr. Eko's Cranium Crushing Christ StickTM .How can it not be? It's called irony: when the literal meaning and the actual meaning are completely opposite. "Jesus isn't a weapon"... "Well, he was kickin' people upside the cranium for awhile on Craphole ma". It shows up again at the party later....

They have the "island motif" party, with all of it's tropical garishness--it's like a crazy Alice in Wonderland party compared to the island. Sensory overload. "You know how my mom is"he says...well, "No tropical shirts and pina coladas on Craphole Island ma. Ranch dressing, 15 year old crackers and 12 year old hot beer on the island ma..." Shows up later with the car and elder figures too...

Locke takes Hurley to mysterious old Hatch, Hurley sees numbers and decides he doesn't want nothin' to do with it. But he eventually does. Cheech shows Hurley shiny new car, Hurley sees the numbers and decides he doesn't want nothin' to do with it. But he eventually does. Soooo, isn't it ironic...dontcha think? (<>..<>)

"Hugo's such a good son. He knows of my love for the savior, so he commissioned artisans in Taxco to custom carve for me this statue in solid gold."

Taxco is in the Mexican State of Guerrero. The statue was Gold, yet Taxco is know for its silver mines.

There is a statue of Jesus at the very top of the town called "Cristo"
http://www.camaradasdoniva.com.br/fotos/rio/images/Cristo%20Redentor%203_jpg.jpg

The silver was discovered by captains in Hernan Cortes army in 1524. They were in search of Iron for weapons when the silver was discovered.

There is a very famous church in Taxco named Parish Church of Santa Prisca. Saint Prisca was of a noble family and at thirteen years of age was accused of Christianity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity) before Emperor Claudius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Claudius). By his command she was taken to the temple of Apollo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo) to sacrifice there, and when she refused, was buffeted and sent to prison. She was released from prison, but when she still held steadfastly to the faith, they flogged her, poured boiling tallow upon her, and sent her back a second time. She was at last thrown to a lion in the amphitheater, but it quietly lay down at her feet. She was starved for three days in a slaves' prison house, and then tortured upon the rack. Pieces of flesh were next torn from her body with iron hooks, and she was thrown on a burning pile. She miraculously still remained alive, and was accordingly beheaded outside the city.

Ok, after all that research, I think I have found NO connection to Lost. But I wanted to post it because it took me so long.....LOL

I have been pondering the whole "Jesus Christ is not a weapon" Could this be a reference to the GOD Particle (Higgs Bosen) scientists are seeking at LHC?? Many people are very scared about the LHC. Believing it will end the world.. I have also read scientist speculate at what Weapons of Mass Destruction would be made out of the finding of the Higgs Bosen Particle.

Here is a very interesting book I found....
In John Ringo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ringo)'s Into the Looking Glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Into_the_Looking_Glass&action=edit&redlink=1) the University of Central Florida is destroyed by a 60 kiloton explosion that is first thought to be a nuclear weapon, but turns out to be a mishap with a Higgs Boson. This also leads to gateways to other worlds and a war with the aliens on the other side of the gates.

I taped the ep and didn't see it till tonight. I've been wondering why facebook has several Hurley flair with that quote "Jesus Christ is not a weapon" -- seemed very strange. I had to laugh when I heard the line from hurley's mom.
