...with so little fuel? Jack was very adamant before about not going back without fuel. Why would he want to do it later? I understand they weren't able to fill up the tank because of the bomb on the boat...but why would they go back?
Is it because they had no other choice?
That's the most logical answer I can think of.

Where else were they going to go? It was pretty much the boat, the island or open water.

Earlier he had said that there was no fuel on the island-maybe he suddenly remembered that wasn't exactly true. The Others had to have fuel to run their boats with as well as for that Dharma V. W. van to have run on

Yeah, I think Jack realized there was no other option after the boat blew up. I wondered, too, about the Others' fuel supplies; there had to be some source of fuel on island. If not, at least they would've landed on land instead of going down.
