View Full Version : Plot hole with the fuel?

Hi! I think I found a plot hole and I was wondering if someone could explain this to me.

When the O6+Frank/Desmond were flying to the freighter and they were running out of fuel, why didn't they just go back to the Island? True, the chopper would be useless to them on the Island with no fuel, but why didn't they just want to wait for the Zodiac raft to come pick them all up? Sayid and Kate both knew of the raft and none of them knew of the C4 on the freighter, so why the insistence on going straight there?

Didn't Ben tell Jack that he wanted to be on the helicopter within the hour, adding a sense of urgency to get off the island? I don't know, it all happened so quickly.

So you think Jack believed the island would disappear?

Anyway, i think Choppies thought it would be better to try to the very last to find the freighter.

If they didn't find it, they'd have to crash and swim/lifeboat back to the island.

Though risky, they thought it was still a better idea.

Jack didn't know the Island was going to be moving. He just knew what Ben told him, that if he wanted to leave he should plan on being on the boat within the hour. None of them had any knowledge of the C4, so the freighter was the safest place they knew of. Also, as far as anyone on the chopper knew, the ship's engines were down still and it wasn't going anywhere.

I wonder what the Dharma vans and the boats ran on........beer?

I think there must be a fuel source some place close. We're probably not supposed to be logical about this though. The helicopter had to try to make it to the freighter so Sawyer could jump and so they could have the big dramatic escape and explosion. That's it. The writers have gotten lazy with the details, but covering every little detail at this point would be impossible. Just go with it.

It seemed like desperation to me.
Jack was finally off the island. He just couldn't bare the thought of going back.

I disagree. While there is undoubtedly a fuel stash on the island, none of the people on the copter knew where it was. They didn't have time looking for a Chevron station.

As already stated by another poster, Ben made it seem urgent that they leave the island.

Lastly, where were they in relation to the island? The transcript is not on Lostpedia yet, so I'm not sure if Frank thought they should head back. Even so, Jack was urging him to make it to the freighter.

I don't see any plot holes in this one.

Well, even if they did, there'd be none left as Sawyer drank it all, so they'd be screwed either way.

I don't think they were being lazy, Jack was just so dertermined to leave the Island, he didn't want to go back. Remember, Jack was yelling at Frank not to return to the Island, they were so close and Jack wanted to keep his promise of getting people home. It was more of a character point than plot hole. That's what I think anyway :)

don't use future events to judge past decisions.

in the moment they were on the chopper before sawyer jumped, where was the safest place to be?

The freighter, which already had several of their people, probably medical tools, better provisions for the baby and fuel that was readily accessible

or

the island where several have died, where ben and john were up to something fishy, where there were suspected mercinaries with guns running around, faraday even said they HAVE to move off this island now. Lapidus did as well. They thought going back was the more fatal move. I tend to agree.
