ETA: Our first glimpse of Sayid as less than a strong leader (outside of physical) is when he hears the whispers in the end. He clearly seems confused and at the mercy of the jungle. As of that point, we hadn't seen him at the mercy of anything or anyone except Danielle. And that quickly turned in his favor.
